Friday Family Photo

This week I went to Littlefield to help out with my youngest sister’s two children. DeAnna went to San Antonio with the Littlefield Band for marching contest.  I didn’t have to go, but I knew mom would need some help. We had a really good time and things went smoothly. On the last day I was there I only had about an hour to spare, but did manage to get a few photos to use for my Friday Family Photo blog.

Today’s photo is one of me and my three sisters with our first grade school teacher. Back in the old days you didn’t have the luxury we do now to see the picture before it is  produced, so mom had no way of knowing De was halfway cropped out. We are working on some “magic” to Photoshop her back in the photo, but I still wanted to post it for today’s photo anyway. (Sorry  De.)

Miss Ham was our teacher and all four of us girls had her a ourgirls and Miss Ham2 first grade teacher. Some of Daddy’s sisters also had Miss Ham as their teacher.  She was a very good teacher and taught all of us to read, except De, she could already read when she entered school. When I started having “second generation” students I called De and said, “Just call me Miss Ham.” De asked me why I said that so I told her I now was teaching children of former students, just as Miss Ham. De replied, “Yeah, but Miss Ham was ancient!” To which I replied, “So am I. Anyone have a spare walker I could borrow.” Thinking back, and looking at the photos, Miss Ham was probably in her fifties or sixties. Same as me (fifties) when I retired. Miss Ham was the typical school marm that dedicated her life to teaching.  I also was Miss Ham’s student helper while I was in Junior High. In the photo, DeAnna would have been six, Lavonna would have been nine, I was fourteen (notice the size difference between me and my sisters) and Darla was seventeen. Darla looks thrilled to be there, huh? Miss Ham, age unknown, but she doesn’t look that old to me now. So here’s to Miss Ham, thanks for being a wonderful teacher and giving your life to your profession.

How neat is that??? We are going to read a blog in thirty years about one of your students/parents loving Ms. Hare! You were the best and most dedicated teacher. You were the "popular" teacher too....how many kids have I met that said they were in your class...and wasn't!! When I see Jack always asks..."how's Ms. Hare - she was my FAVORITE TEACHER!"

Miss Ham was a special lady for sure. She made sure there was a chair left by the drinking fountain for you because you weren't tall enough to reach it to get a drink. Also, since De could already read when she reached 1st grade Miss Ham always had 2nd grade books on hand for De to read from. That must have taken some time from her busy schedule, but she always did it. Thanks for the good memory Linda. Love, Mom
